Students with children

Applies to those taking university and university college education, vocational school, primary school or upper secondary education without statutory rights as a young person.

Child grant

Additional loan

If you are above the age of 18 and have children below the age of 16, you may borrow up to NOK 57,940 per year, with an upward limit of NOK 115,880 for the years in which you receive loans from Lånekassen. You are entitled to this loan regardless of which type of education you are taking, with the exception of primary school. The additional loan is not means tested and cannot be converted to a grant. If you are above 30, you may in some cases receive a larger additional loan.

Student with children

If you have children, you may be entitled to extra loans and grants. The main rule is that the children are below the age of 16 and that they live with you at least 40 per cent of the time.

Extra loans and grants are in addition to the basic support, which is the loan all students receive. You may thus receive basic support, child grant and additional loan at the same time.

You may receive a child grant for as long as you are a student and are entitled to loans and grants from Lånekassen, up to the year in which the child reaches the age of 16. In the academic year 2024-2025 you can receive this grant if you have a child born in 2009 or later. If both parents are students, both may receive a child grant and additional loan at the same time.

How to apply

There is no separate application for these loans and grants. When you apply for a normal grant and loan, Lånekassen automatically considers whether you may be eligible for a child grant. However, you must choose yourself whether you also want to apply for an additional loan.
