Exceptions to the income threshold

Because of the corona virus epidemic, students who work in certain groups may receive income over the income threshold and still have their loan converted into a grant. The exception is continued for the health care sector in all of 2022, and new to the kindergarten- and school sector as of 2022.

Log in to submit documentation

You do not have to submit documentation unless you receive a decision saying that your income was over the threshold to receive a grant.

You may submit documentation as soon as you receive this decision. Then you need to log in and select Send in documentation in the menu.

Work in the health care sector

The exception from the income threshold for students working in the health care sector lasts from 1 March 2020 - 31 Descember 2022.

This means that you can earn over the threshold during this period, and still have your loan converted into a grant. If you have other income from other employers during the same period, the exception will not apply to such income.

The government has determined that this exception shall apply to students in higher and other education in Norway and abroad.

You must document that the income is related to the pandemic

If your income did not exceed the threshold, you do not need to submit anything. However, if you receive a decision saying that your income was over the threshold to receive a grant, your case will be reviewed if you submit;

  • paychecks that show that your income is from the health sector, and how much income you have received

Deadline for submission

You submit the documentation as soon as you have received a decision on control of income and assets. The appeal deadline of three weeks does not apply to submitting new information on corona-related work, only for other matters.

The wealth and social security benefit thresholds still apply

No exceptions have been made to the thresholds which apply to how much wealth or social security benefit you can have before your grant is reduced. These thresholds still apply to students who could be exempt from the income threshold due to work in the health care sector.

Students who have children

Furthermore, students who have children will not receive a reduction in their childcare grant on the basis of additional income from work in the health care sector which has been carried out by their spouse or partner. This exception also applies to the period 1 March 2020 and up to and including 31 December 2021. If your partner or spouse has other income that is not in the health care sector during the same period, the exception will not apply to such income.
